Disconnecting from your Cellphone and Electronics

A new study is out on cell phone use. It's directed at our teenage youth. They find that when you disconnect from your cell phone, while at school, your mental health improves significantly as does your ability to learn.

I know for myself, that I must disconnect from the cell phone, the computer, and the TV a couple of days each week. The constant onslaught of negative things can destroy your mental health.

Breaking away from the electronic prison that we sometimes place ourselves in is the only way to reignite family and that time to play in the dirt. So many people today simply cannot disconnect and their mental health suffers greatly.

Owning a smartphone in early adolescence is linked to higher risks of depression, obesity, and poor sleep, according to a CHOP study with Berkeley and Columbia. A new study from researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in collaboration with researchers from the University of California, Berkeley and Columbia University in New York, found that owning a smartphone in early adolescence is associated with increased risks of depression, obesity and insufficient sleep compared to not owning a smartphone. For youth who own a smartphone, earlier age of acquisition is linked to higher rates of obesity and insufficient sleep. The study was published today in the journal PEDIATRICS.The study on teen smartphone use was prompted by rising societal concerns about smartphone use and its impact on adolescent mental health. Caregivers often struggle with deciding when to allow smartphone access, hindered by a lack of specific data about smartphones’ impact on the wellbeing of children and adolescents. While prior research found negative health impacts from screen time, the effects of smartphone use specifically remained unclear. In this study, researchers analyzed data collected between 2018 and 2021 from more than 10,000 adolescents from across the US who participated in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (ABCD). The researchers considered smartphone ownership and the age of first acquisition, adjusting for demographic and socioeconomic variables, ownership of other devices, pubertal development and parental monitoring. The researchers did not investigate which specific features of smartphone use are linked to poorer health. The researchers found that smartphone ownership at age 12 was associated with increased risks of depression, obesity, and insufficient sleep, with younger age of acquisition linked to additional risks of obesity and insufficient sleep. Furthermore, among adolescents who did not have a smartphone by age 12, acquiring a smartphone within the following year was associated with a greater risk of mental health problems and insufficient sleep at age 13, compared to peers who remained without a phone by 13. Ran Barzilay, MD, PhD “Our findings suggest that we should view smartphones as a significant factor in teen health, approaching the decision to give a child a phone with care and considering potential impacts on their life and health,” said Ran Barzilay, MD, PhD, lead author of the study and a child-psychiatrist with the Youth Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Research Center at CHOP. “We are not claiming smartphones are detrimental to all adolescents' health; rather, we advocate for thoughtful consideration of the health implications, balancing both positive and negative consequences. For many teens, smartphones can play a constructive role by strengthening social connections, supporting learning, and providing access to information and resources that promote personal growth. Likewise, some families may view a smartphone as a necessity for safety or communication.”In the future, the researchers aim to investigate specific aspects of smartphone use, such as app types and usage patterns that are linked to adverse health effects. They plan to study children acquiring smartphones at younger ages and to understand which youth are vulnerable to negative effects and who might benefit from smartphone use. They hope their findings can help protect children and adolescents who own smartphones. “Most probably, all teens will eventually have a smartphone. Once this happens, it is advisable to monitor what our children do on their phones, ensuring they're not exposed to inappropriate content and that smartphones don't disrupt sleep,” said Barzilay, who is also an assistant professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and a part of the Lifespan Brain Institute (LiBI) at CHOP and Penn Medicine. “It’s critical for young people to have time away from their phones to engage in physical activity, which can protect against obesity and enhance mental health over time.”Recommendations include:Establish clear family rules before giving your child a phone, possibly using an agreement to define usage terms.Set guidelines for phone use in bedrooms, at the dinner table, and during homework, ensuring all caregivers and kids stick to them.Adjust privacy and content settings to avoid inappropriate material and regularly discuss phone-related issues like sleep disruption or conflicts to find solutions together. For caregivers seeking additional resources on managing smartphone use among adolescents, Barzilay recommends additional guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.Dr. Barzilay is supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Learn more about the study and its findings in the following New York Times and CNN articles. I believe it's true that our mental health suffers from constant attention to phone, to, and other devices.

I recently decided to read a book. Fiction. Pure fiction. But guess what! I can't be bothered with holding a real book and actually turning pages. I read on my phone or computer.

    I know. Addicted.

I still have my kindle book I bought about 20 years ago, it still runs, the great beauty of having one I can download many books for free because the books copyrights run out at 1923, thus anything can be downloaded at Amazon for free. I have General Grants great Memoir free, Robinson Cruso free, Daniel Boone free, Life and times of Fredrick Douglass and more.

I was really disappointed when cell phone electromagnetic "pollution" was not the cause of Colony Collapse Disorder, that would've been a game changer for civilization ... text or starve.

We don't use our phones at the dinner table. I made that rule. (breakfast, lunch or supper)

Same here regarding phones. My ring is a non descript ring on low volume. My kids text rather than call. If I hear my phone and don't recognize the number, I don't answer. I also never call anyone.

That's how much i dislike phones.

There is a growing population that do not carry credit cards or ID's. Everything is on and actionable by their phones.

Maybe a high altitude electromagnetic pulse is what this nation needs.

                    I feel that coming. I don't like it. I don't trust it.

I could deal with that except that I am in Oklahoma and my four children are in Washington State (2), Kansas, and Upper NY State. My brothers are in Texas and Tennessee. My sister in law is in Minnesota. Other family in Indiana and Florida.

That's my family. I would be crushed if I couldn't know they are okay.

Here is what Elon Musk says about the future of phones. In 5 or 6 years phones as we know them will be gone. We will still have a "device" formerly known as a phone.
I am posting a short video here, but I'll admit I don't understand it. Of course when I was a young child I didn't understand what "pay tv" would look like. Later I didn't understand how in the world we could all have our own phone number............so there's that.

Something that bugs me about a lot of supposed warnings and papers published about using computers too much (not the small Star Trek Android and MePhones) the usual computer use, like a tower and monitor, or a laptop and so on . . . I am sure over the years I have seen warnings about how your health could be in trouble with too much use of said; BUT ...

How many are employed in industries with just that sort of equipment and are at it four hours straight and lunch and then fours hours again. Maybe an unusual event and they have to be at a terminal/work station for even longer hours. And so on.

Have any of you read about medical professionals writing that those workers are risking health troubles because of that work? Any of those folks have union membership and stuff? Have we seen union complaints on health issues for such workers?

Must we be concerned in this Community that all y'all Mods and Admins are damaging your health because you are working long hours and have to read - - - well, my writings are probably the worst of the worst. I might cause headache damage.

Still, the IT industry is employing a whole bunch of folks and I don't think I have read much about health issues with the workers. (Not 'wokers', by the way. Completely different health issue there.)

This study was aimed at our youth and the issues associated with them becoming hermits and not communicating with people around them in their young age.

There are most certainly health risks with looking at a monitor all day. The eye strain and other things that are associated with it. For adults I believe it's the long-term use that is so negative. An adult can ignore their children or their spouse and that creates stressors in the family.

I think it's the basic human need for humans to talk with humans. That basic interaction. I think we all get health issues from doing them at work and then going home and doing the same.
