US Always Knew NATO Expansion Led to War

by Ted Snider Posted onJanuary 09, 2025

Excerpt:

The present severed from the past is easily misunderstood. In discussions of the Russia-Ukraine war, not enough is made of the historical facts that, at the end of the Cold War, the newly independent Ukraine promised not to join NATO, and NATO promised not to expand to Ukraine.

Not enough is made of the fact that Article IX of the 1990 Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine, “External and Internal Security,” says that Ukraine “solemnly declares its intention of becoming a permanently neutral state that does not participate in military blocs….” That promise was later enshrined in Ukraine’s constitution, which committed Ukraine to neutrality and prohibited it from joining any military alliance: that included NATO.

Nor is enough made of the fact that in 1990 and 1991, the Bush administration gave assurances to Gorbachev – assurances that arguably reached the level of a deal – that NATO would not expand east of Germany, including to Ukraine.

But even less is made of what the Clinton administration later promised Yeltsin nor of what the U.S. already knew at the time of where plans of NATO expansion to Ukraine would lead.

We allowed Russia to invade the "freed" nation. NATO had every reason to be concerned.

Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, making the OP claim anachronistically false.

Uh, it was the unwarranted expansion of NATO after Russia had been assured would not happen was destroying the buffer zone between Europe and Russia that was in place for many years that made it stable for the region this became an existential threat to Russia who absurdly was still being treated as a cold war threat which is irrational as their Navy was no threat to Europe and there was no doctrinal expansionist action either as Russia let go many countries back in the 1990's who are still independent today.

When Ukraine after toppling a lawfully elected President who didn't violate their constitution in 2014, they quickly stepped-up attacks on the dominant Russian majority in the Donbass and Crimea regions with stupid laws and then armed attacks when they were resisted that brought on a civil war, that Ukraine started.

I covered this in detail in the old forum showing that it was the American government who created this disaster that continues to this day in various ways that keeps being ignored.

A free nation was encroached on by Russia. They responded by wanting to get into NATO to help bolster their national security. I see this as a common sense moved by Ukraine to try and keep Russia from further taking their lands.

Had Russia not been in the mood to steal lands I doubt this would have occurred.

No one disputed the invasion by Russia but then gets ignored over and over was the pre-invasion proposals that would have prevented the invasion over simple proposals that the West IMMEDIATELY rejected.

Ukraine was already in a civil war with separatists BECAUSE Ukraine hated them which was why they abusing the majority Russian population in the Donbas and Crimea areas with ugly legislation taking away rights and more it was the reason why Separatists came into existence to defend themselves.

Here it is again:

2021 – Russia submits negotiation proposals while sending more forces to the border with Ukraine. U.S. and NATO officials reject the Russian proposals immediately.

The West didn't even try a diplomatic route to prevent invasion and has ever since sabotaged diplomatic efforts of other parties, a sign the West wanted the war all along and determined to prolong it.

NATO and the West didn't adhere to the many nations promise not to expand NATO made to Russia in the 1990's which I have posted declassified documents showing it.

Here is a response to the war mongering actions of the West/NATO group, keep in mind Russia was in economic shambles and militarily in disarray in no position to be a threat to Europe and with no doctrine for expansionism in it the actions of NATO were unwarranted, there were already more than enough defensive deterrence in place in the 1990's.

Opposition to NATO Expansion

Arms Control Today

Excerpt:

On June 26, a group of 50 prominent foreign policy experts that included former senators, retired military officers, diplomats and academicians, sent an open letter to President Clinton outlining their opposition to NATO expansion. Stanley Resor, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arms Control Association, spoke at the press conference announcing the letter, focusing on the arms control implications of expansion. Resor's remarks and the group's letter are printed below.

Plenty of blame to go around on this one. There are no good guys in this one. I think that biden and company pushed for bringing the Ukraine into NATO for the specific purpose of protecting their money laundering country and all the evidence that it held of US Corruption that Russia would have gladly exposed to the world upon successfully invading them.

There was no altruistic reason on the part of the biden admin for protecting Ukraine. They were protecting their own worthless necks.

Having said all of this, the Ukrainian citizens definitely got the shaft.
